Description

Within the context of VectorNet, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) publish regularly updated vector distribution maps, which are informed by a comprehensive review of the literature and data shared by experts, and also completed by targeted field studies. This study aimed at completing the distribution dataset for, in particular, Culex tritaeniorhynchus and other Culex species (such as Cs. modestus, Cx. theileri, Cx. perexiguus) in the Balkan countries and southern Italy, but also for other VectorNet priority species in other countries of Europe, the Mediterranean Middle East and North Africa. The obtained dataset includes published data collated through a targeted literature review and data generated and shared by local teams (7,915 data lines).

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 7,915 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods

Existing mosquito occurrence data were collected by contacting local experts from the Bakan countries and Italy. Original field data were collected by local teams according to standard procedures described in https://efsa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.2903/sp.efsa.2018.EN-1435

Study Extent Field mosquito occurrence data collection in Balkan countries and southern Italy

Method step description:

  1. Step 1: collection of existing occurrence data for the aimed Culex spp. in published literature (any year); Step 2: collection of unpublished existing data of Culex and other VectorNet priority species shared by local teams (over the seasons 2021–2025); Step 3: field sampling of original data at pre-selected locations suitable for the targeted Culex spp. in June–October 2025
