Description

Between 1931 and 1941, it completed ten major ocean science voyages, primarily focusing on the collection of marine organisms along the Pacific coast stretching from San Francisco to Peru. Equipped with specialized deep-sea dredging apparatus, the vessel could reach depths of 7,000 feet, allowing scientists to sample the benthic environment and analyze the myriad specimens brought to the surface. Velero III's impressive range and capacity enabled extended expeditions, lasting several months at a time. In addition to its extensive work along the mainland coast, Velero III also explored the California Channel Islands, leading to valuable collections and subsequent scientific publications. Notable expeditions included the 1939 voyage to South America , further explorations of the Galapagos Islands , and the 1940 expedition into the Gulf of California. The vessel's versatility is further underscored by its less common foray into the Caribbean Sea.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 31,820 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
