Description

"A specific collaboration was established with entomologists who had received training within the framework of VectorNet, during the “Training course on Culicoides biting midges” held in 2023 at IZSAM in Teramo, Italy. The collection sites have been selected according to the possibility of placing traps near animals (excluding enclosed stables), the availability of collaborative farm owners, and their distribution across different regions of the Countries.Blacklight suction traps were used to collect data on the distribution and seasonal abundance of the Culicoides vector species.A total of 37 collection sites were selected and sampled, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lybia, Montenegro, and Slovenia."

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 2,443 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Identifier VN3-SC1-SLR-CULICOIDES
Funding OC/EFSA/BIOHAW/2023/05
Study Area Description "A total of 24 collection sites were sampled between May and October 2025 in the Balkans. In Northern Africa, 13 collections sites were sampled in 2025 in Lybia. Among these, seven sites had also been sampled in 2024, and those collections were made available and included in the study."

Sampling Methods

"The collection sites were selected based on the possibility of placing traps in proximity to animals (excluding enclosed stables), the availability of cooperative farm owners, and their distribution across different regions of the participating countries. Blacklight suction traps were used to collect midges, operating overnight on a monthly or biweekly basis."

Study Extent "A total of 24 collection sites were sampled between May and October 2025 in the Balkans. In Northern Africa, 13 collections sites were sampled in 2025 in Lybia. Among these, seven sites had also been sampled in 2024, and those collections were made available and included in the study."

Method step description:

  1. The collected samples were analysed jointly by IZSAM and the participating countries.
