Description

This dataset presents a occurrence dataset of freshwater Cladocera species (Crustacea: Branchiopoda) observed in the wetlands of the Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah, West Bengal based on a study by Venkataraman and Das (2001). The Indian Botanic Garden located on the northern bank of the river Hooghly, Howrah district, West Bengal consists of twenty-five wetlands of varying sizes. To study the Cladoceran fauna, four perennial lakes and ponds were selected. The survey was repeated for three different periods: April 1994, September 1994 and March 1995. Of the 38 species of Cladocera, belonging to 6 families and 24 genera, recorded in the present study, three are new records to West Bengal and one Diaphanosoma leuctenbergianum, is a new record to India. All the four species have been described in detail to facilitate identification. Except for a few species of Cladocera, most Chydorids occur in wetlands with specific macrophytes. The association between Cladocera and macrophytes suggests a specific interrelationship, which is yet to be established.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 20 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Event (core)

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
