Description

This resource presents the checklist of the species from the family Cerambycidae (Coleoptera: Cerambycoidea) collected in the Caribbean region of Colombia, founded during the revision of entomological collections in Colombia. In this checklist two subfamilies, 34 tribes, 89 genera and 127 species are reported. This information was gathered from the following entomological collections in Colombia: Universidad del Atlántico, Puerto Colombia (UARC), Museo Javeriano historia natural Lorenzo Uribe, S.J., Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá (MPUJ), Instituto de Ciencias Naturales, Universidad Nacional, Bogotá (ICN), Colección Taxonómica Nacional de Insectos Luis María Murillo, Corporación Colombiana de Investigación agropecuaria, Mosquera (CTNI). For all species the distribution in the Caribbean departments was indicated.

Data Records

The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 258 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Taxon (core)
258
Distribution
307

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

This project is aimed to explore the diversity of selected groups of arthropods (Cerambycoidea, Formicidae, Opiliones, Araneae, Odonata and Mantodea) from the Caribbean region of Colombia, which are unexplored and important for conservation. To achieve this, a series of visits to different collections was performed by experts of each group. The results of this project will generate a base to posterior studies applied to the conservation of strategic ecosystems like the tropical dry forest.

Title Preliminary checklist and occurrences of arthropod´s selected groups (Cerambycoidea, Formicidae, Opiliones, Araneae, Odonata and Mantodea) from the Caribbean of Colombia.
Identifier BID-CA2020-036-INS
Funding This project is funded by the European Union, though a grant given by the GBIF with the program BID Caribbean 2020
Study Area Description The study area of the species included in this checklist is limited to the Caribbean region of Colombia, currently composed by the departments Atlántico, Bolívar, César, Córdoba, La Guajira, Magdalena and Sucre.
Design Description A revision to different entomological collections in Colombia was performed to gather information about the species of Cerambycidae occurring in the Caribbean region.

Sampling Methods

Researchers with good taxonomic knowledge visited different entomological collections and revised the Cerambycidae collection, identifying to species level when necessary and listing the departments of the Caribbean region of Colombia where those species occur.

Study Extent The study was performed in different entomological collections across Colombia since October 2021, where samples of Cerambycidae representative from the Caribbean coast of Colombia were deposited.
Quality Control The taxonomic quality of the checklist is ensured by having experts confirming the identification of the species. The data quality is ensured with the revision performed by the BID Regional Project Support Team, where all critical errors are pointed and fixed.

Method step description:

  1. Each researcher visited entomological collections in Barranquilla and Bogotá. It was identified the samples of Cerambycidae from the Caribbean coast of Colombia. All available occurrence data was written in a Darwin Core template available in the GBIF website. When necessary, the researcher identified or confirmed the species. From the occurrence data, it was elaborated the checklist of species. The data was sent for quality control. All critical errors were fixed, all non-critical errors were discussed and incorporated when necessary. The data was published and available to posterior modifications.

Purpose

This checklist has as main purpose to increase the current state of knowledge of the diversity of Cerambycidae in the Caribbean region where it is found protected areas, strategic ecosystems as tropical dry forest and landscapes with a high connectivity and ecological integrity. This information will be useful to further investigation on the conservation of those ecosystems. Also, with this checklist the information of Cerambycidae in biological collection, in national and regional level, will be available through GBIF, where this information can be consulted for taking actions to protect those important ecosystems. Lastly, with the generation of this checklist will strength the interinstitutional network between the revised collections.

Maintenance Description This checklist will be constantly updated when visits to new entomological collections is performed during the project timeline. After the project ends, the checklist will be updated with the species collected and deposited in the hosting institution (Universidad del Atlántico) in upcoming years.
