Description

This dataset includes Calendula L. specimens held at AVE (Herbarium of the University of Aveiro), and used for the recently published partial taxonomic revisions for the Iberian Peninsula, Morocco and some taxa from Algeria and Tunisia, and the Canary Islands, by P. Silveira et al. (Phytotaxa 352 (1): 1–91; Phytotaxa 605 (1): 1–83 and Phytotaxa 640 (2): 125–160). Most of the specimens were collected by P. Silveira and collaborators, but some collections were offered. For example, these include specimens collected and cultivated by Olofron Plume, on the scope of her PhD at Cornell University, and by HAL (Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg herbarium).

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 406 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Geographic Coverage

These specimens are mostly from continental Portugal, Spain and Morocco, but with scattered specimens collected from west in the Azores to east in the Lebanon, and from the north in Galicia and Greece to the south in the Canary Islands and south Morocco. From a Latitude of aprox. 28 to 43 degrees, and from a longitude of -25 to 36 degrees. Some were cultivated outside its original range.

Bounding Coordinates South West [27.861, -25.017], North East [42.639, 36.54]

Taxonomic Coverage

This dataset pertains only to the genus Calendula L., included in the family Asteraceae

Genus Calendula (Marigold)

Temporal Coverage

Start Date / End Date 1966-04-28 / 2022-04-30

Project Data

The aims of this project were to: - mount the specimens of Calendula collected under the scope of the recently published taxonomical revisions of Calendula, including 8 type specimens; - make their data, and a selection of images, including the type specimens, available online on GBIF, therefore promoting universal access to this information; - train young alumni in the study of flora and herbarium management.

Title Backlog processing and digitalization of specimens collected for the taxonomic revision of Calendula L. (Asteraceae)
Identifier Calendula L. specimens held at AVE herbarium
Funding IAPT 2025 “Small Collections Grant”
Study Area Description Mostly Iberian Peninsula, Macaronesia and the understudied North of Africa (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia)
Design Description Two students were hired to process the Calendula backlog, i.e.: mounting in cardboard, including labels and using appropriate gummed archival linen tape. Type specimens were wrapped in their appropriate red banded sheets, while all the other specimens were enclosed in vegetal paper, and genus folders. This renders these collections ready to be consulted by any researcher upon request. Furthermore, their data, which has already been databased, will be made available on GBIF (https://www.gbif.org/) along with, at least, a selection of images, which will include eight (8) type specimens.

Sampling Methods

Sampling of the specimens was done following the usual methods described for their collection, preparation and mounting (Pinho et al. 2016)

Study Extent This data covers only a small part of the AVE collection, dedicated to the genus Calendula L. Geographically, it encompasses specimens from Spain (185), Portugal (84), Morocco (77) Italy (23, all from Sicily), Lebanon (17), Algeria (14), Tunisia (6), Israel/Palestine (2), and Greece (1). The temporal boundaries goes from 1966-1981's collections from German botanists, offered by HAL to AVE, to 2022's collections made on the scope of the expeditions to the Canary Islands made by P. Silveira's team (I. Simão and J.A. Reyes-Betancort.
Quality Control Consistency and standardization of the geography, people's names, taxonomy, dates, etc., was reviewed using BRAHMS 7.6 (Oxford University, UK). Coordinate uncertainty of the specimens that did not include precise coordinates of the collection site was estimated using Geopick (https://geopick.gbif.org).

Method step description:

  1. The collection was databased in BRAHMS 7.6 (Oxford University, UK), either directly from the field books (team's collections) or from original specimens' labels/documentation (other collector's specimens offered to AVE). Taxonomy fields, including authorship names, were checked against IPNI (https://www.ipni.org/) and POWO (https://powo.science.kew.org/). Standardization and checking of consistency was done with the tools available in BRAHMS 7.6. A selection of specimens, at least one for each taxon, several for more common and morphological diverse taxa, were imaged using a digital camera Canon 100D, installed inside a Godox DF-01 Light cube 80x80x80cm and connected to a PC running digiCamControl 2.1.6.0 (2018 Duka István). Contrast and light were adjusted using Paint.NET 5.1.12 (dotPDN LLC), and stored in JPG format at https://archive.org/.
