All known localities for species in the genus Triscaedecia (Lepidoptera: Alucitidae)

Latest version published by GBIF Secretariat on Apr 2, 2019 GBIF Secretariat

The genus Triscaedecia occupies a specific place morphologically within the family Alucitidae. The wings of all other representatives of this family are all split into six lobes but, in Triscaedecia, the hind wings have seven lobes. All wings in Triscaedecia are split only from about two-thirds. Incomplete splitting of the wings is also found in some other genera of Alucitidae: Hebdomactis Meyrick, 1929 from New Guinea, the Neotropical genera Paelia Walker, 1866, Hexeretmis Meyrick, 1929, Prymnotomis Meyrick, 1931 and Alinquata Fleming, 1948, and the African genus Microschismus Fletcher, 1909.

Only two species were formerly known from Triscaedecia (Meyrick 1910; Gielis 2003). T. septemdactyla was described from Papua New Guinea: Bismarck Archipelago (Pagenstecher 1900) and T. dactyloptera from Sri Lanka (Hampson 1905). Subsequently, T. septemdactyla has also been recorded from Indonesia: Papua (Gielis 2009). Fletcher (1910) supplemented Hampson's original description and image of the adult of T. dactyloptera with further data.

During examination of materials from the Natural History Museum, London, UK, the authors found some unidentified specimens of this genus, including four species new to science. All the specimens are deposited in the collection of Natural History Museum (BMNH—London, UK).

This dataset summarises all recorded localities for Triscaedecia species, based on Pagenstecher, 1900, Die Lepidopteren-Fauna des Bismarck-Archipels; Hampson, 1905, On three remarkable new genera of Microlepidoptera; Fletcher, 1910, The plume-moths of Ceylon. Part II—The Orneodidae; Gielis, 2009, Additions to the Alucitidae of Papua, Indonesia (Lepidoptera); and Ustjuzhanin, Kovtunovich & Hobern, 2019, A taxonomic review of the genus Triscaedecia (Lepidoptera: Alucitidae) in the world fauna.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 16 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

The article describes four new species of Alucitidae in the genus Triscaedecia from the Malay and Polynesian regions: Triscaedecia sulawesi Ustjuzhanin, Kovtunovich & Hobern sp. nov., T. sarawaki Ustjuzhanin, Kovtunovich & Hobern sp. nov., T. svetlanae Ustjuzhanin, Kovtunovich & Hobern sp. nov., and T. suva Ustjuzhanin, Kovtunovich & Hobern sp. nov. The female genitalia of Triscaedecia dactyloptera Hampson, 1905 and the adult and the male genitalia of Triscaedecia septemdactyla (Pagenstecher, 1900) are described and illustrated for the first time. Diagnostic characters are specified for each new taxon, genitalia are described and illustrated, and images are provided of adults. A spreadsheet of all known localities and specimens is included as a supplementary file.
