Description
A checklist of 11000, mammalian specimen records was published on GBIF. The resulting occurrence dataset provides 10965 (not 11000,due to duplication of accession numbers) records of when and where the specimens were collected. However the data may not be complete in some areas as there are no records for some of the variables. Taxonomic, collection methods and other attributes of this data are documented fully on the checklist. Please refer to our checklist publication on GBIF for this data.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 10,965 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Geographic Coverage
Data was collected predominantly from Southern Africa. Localities have been defined up to city or town level. However specific localities are available on request. Maps for different species will also be made available on our Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe website (http://naturalhistorymuseumzimbabwe.com/).

Sampling Methods
Similar to our checklist dataset, data was converted from analogue and digitized on excel. This data was then curated using open refine and georeferenced using predominantly geolocate and google maps. Gazetteers and historical maps were also used to verify localities.
Study Extent | Specimens were collected predominatly from Southern Africa. They were mainly collected between the early 1900s and early 2000s. |

Method step description:
- The checklist dataset provides a detailed description of the specific methods used to extract and publish the dataset. However more information will be uploaded in due course.
Additional Metadata
On the eventDate column we would like to make our data users aware that the date, 1900/01/00, is a value to show that there was no date provided for the specimen. Therefore this is not the real date but in this case a synonym for absent date.
