Description
New records of marine macroalgal species from Dominican Republic and Haiti (Hispaniola Island) based in scientific literature from 1924 to 1995.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 321 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
This project is elaborating a new database of historical and recent records of marine macroalgae from Hispaniola Island (Dominican Republic and Haiti).
Title | Assessment and update of GBIF marine macroalgae databases (Rhodophyta, Ochrophyta and Chlorophyta) from Haiti and Dominican Republic (Hispaniola). |
---|---|
Identifier | BID-CA2020-012-INS |
Funding | Funded by European Union GBIF. |
Study Area Description | Hispaniola Island: Dominican Republic and Haiti |
Design Description | This project seeks to make new contributions to the knowledge of the marine biodiversity of Hispaniola, updating the inventory of the marine macroalgae species (the last inventory was done by the authors in 2001), while publishing the results to GBIF. The project team will be preparing and publishing technical documents to support the new results, sharing them among binational stakeholders to support the reports and strategies of biodiversity management in both countries. |

Sampling Methods
A search and review of taxonomic, biological, ecological, biogeographical or genetic studies in the Atlantic and Caribbean region of macroalgae species for Haiti and the Dominican Republic within the established limits, was carried out. The taxonomic arrangement of the list of species, as well as the updating of scientific names follow the World Registry of Marine Species (WoRMS). For those records lacking geographic coordinates, but with information on localities and depths, the best practices of georeferencing biological collections were applied to assign coordinates with the support of thematic maps (administrative limits or inland water bodies), topographic sheets, nautical charts and digital bathymetric models, available in the Programa EcoMar GIS database. For coordinates conversion and mapping over the created work map, a combination of tools, was used: Google Earth, Golden Surfer and Mapinfo.
Study Extent | The data are representative of the early macroalgal studies in Dominican Republic (1920 decade) and those carried out in the 1990 decade where several projects were implemented by national and international institutions. The sampling area encompass the boundaries for Dominican Republic and Haiti define by the combination of their exclusive economic zones (EEZ), the marine areas of the International Hydrographic Organization and the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans of UNESCO. Shapefiles were downloaded from the Flanders Marine Institute Website (http://www.marineregions.org/. https://doi.org/10.14284/324) to create a work map. |

Quality Control | The project is being implemented by specialists with practice in literature search and connected with a network of specialists in macroalgae (Marine Macroalgae of Latin-America and the Caribbean Group) for scientific exchange, with experience in the mobilization of biodiversity data and GIS management. The taxonomic arrangement of the list of species, as well as the updating of scientific names follow the World Registry of Marine Species (WoRMS). The AphiaID were included as unique identifier. All coordinates were mapped to check its geographic accuracy. The best GBIF practices were follow during the whole process. |
Method step description:
- 1. Relevant literature identification All taxonomic, biological, ecological, biogeographical or genetic studies in the Atlantic and Caribbean region found in the literature review, with valid reports of macroalgae species for Haiti and the Dominican Republic within the geographic established limits, were included. 2. Secure institutional agreements. When it was necessary, alerts were sent to the institutions of the literature identified as relevant to build the database about Programa EcoMar plan to publish on behalf of them. Only data with positive responses were included. 3. Data capture. Digitalization of all data for occurrences in DwC matrix with a total of 39 fields. 4. Data management Assessment of general dataset quality and use of GBIF data validator services. 5. Data publishing Create a new resource in the GBIF IPT after completing all the sections to publish and register.
