Description

The present list of marine fishes in the Colombian Pacific aims to provide information about the registered fish species in the portion of the Pacific Ocean that belongs to Colombia, based on the review of scientific collections (Universidad del Valle, (CIR-UV), INVEMAR (INV PEC), Parque Nacional Natural Gorgona (PE and MMG) and Instituto de Ciencias de la Universidad Nacional (ICN-MHN) for larvae) and validated regional documents. The 852 species listed belong to 62 orders, 162 families and 475 genera. From these, 79 species are found only in their larval stage, 35 species are cited for the first time in the Pacific of Colombia and 14 species are endemic to the area.

Data Records

The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 836 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Geographic Coverage

The marine spaces of Colombia in the Pacific Ocean cover approximately 359948 km². Its coastline covers jurisdictions of the departments of Chocó, Valle, del Cauca, Cauca, and Nariño, and has a length of 1,300 km from the border with Panama (Punta Ardita) to the mouth of the Mataje River on the border with Ecuador (CCO, 2016) and the oceanic waters whitin the EEZ of Colombia.

Taxonomic Coverage

This depurated list includes three classes, of which 49 orders, 134 families, 434 genera and 780 species correspond to bony fishes; 12 orders, 27 families, 40 genera and 71 species to cartilaginous fishes, plus 1 order, 1 family, 1 genus and 1 species of myxinids. Of the 852 species, 35 (in 19 families) are new records for our country, 14 species are Colombian endemics and 79 records are found only as larvae. Additionally there are 33 species not included in our main list that are reported north and south of our borders, but lack confirmed records within Colombian waters.

Study Area Description The marine territory of the Colombian Pacific covers an area of 35,994,855 km2, which represents 16.4% of the national territory and 36.5% of the country's maritime area. The coast of the Colombian Pacific displays a diverse topography resulting from geological activity caused by the collision of the Nazca and South American tectonic plates (Suárez-Rodríguez 2007, Correa and Morton 2022). Heading north, rocky cliffs, bays, and inlets are characteristics, while the southern region features expansive floodplains, including extensive mangrove areas, estuaries, and coastal islets. Additionally, the Colombian marine territory in the Pacific comprises the coastal island of Gorgona and the oceanic island of Malpelo.
Design Description The list presented here, rather than an addition to existing taxonomic records, aims to purge the records of all those species that have uncertain taxonomic identification or are not supported by verified specimens or publications with repositories deposited in national reference collections. We anticipate the numbers may be low and very conservative, in the hope of contributing to the consolidation of a reliable taxonomic list to which more species can be added in the future.

Sampling Methods

We based our list on confirmed records available from four main recognized Colombian ichthyological collections as follows: Universidad del Valle, (CIR-UV), INVEMAR (INV PEC), Parque Nacional Natural Gorgona (PE and MMG) and Instituto de Ciencias de la Universidad Nacional (ICN-MHN) for larvae. Pictures of confirmed records were included, mainly for big mobile or rare species, only if the original source was available with georeferenced data.

Study Extent The Colombian Pacific Ocean covers 359,948 km2 encompassing the western coast of northern South America from 7.2°N, on the Colombia – Panama border, to 1.4°N at the border with Ecuador, in addition to Gorgona and Malpelo Islands and a large span of open ocean. The Colombian marine territory in the Pacific corresponds to 16.4% of the total national territory and 36.5 % of the country's maritime total.
Quality Control Each record was reviewed with the vouchered specimen in the respective collection.

Method step description:
