Description

The data package corresponds to 1273 bird records published by the Natural History Museum of Denmark, in the localities: Hanstholm Fyr and, Lodbjerg Fyr. Through a literature search from 1886 to 1938 in which any of the 101 species mentioned or the 3 genera found respectively were reported.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,273 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods

1. Digitization of literature 2. Extraction of the text (Scientific name that appears in the book, common name(s) in Danish that appears in the book; locality; year/month/day; observed number of individuals; sex, stage of life; comments, and URL of the digitized book page where the biological record is provided) of the scans using optical character recognition (OCR) software. 3. Data transfer from scanned PDFs to spreadsheet format. 4. Taxonomic verification, Curation, cleaning, format and transformation of the data 5. Introduction of metadata for the published data set.

Study Extent Between 1883-1939, there were 45 lighthouses and lightships in operation in Denmark. The lighthouses were used by several species of birds during the nights of their migration period [Lodbjerg Fyr (56.823428 – 8.262789) and, Hanstholm Fyr (57.112667 - 8.598575)], they were preserved and cataloged by the Copenhagen Museum, and, They documented the observations of the meteorological conditions at the time of the discovery of the specimens.
Quality Control 1. Taxonomic verification, Curation, cleaning, format and transformation of the data 2. Verification of credentials of the institution, director and curator by DanBIF

Method step description:

  1. 1. Digitization of the literature with personnel trained in the use of the scanner and in the extraction of text from the scans using optical character recognition (OCR) software. 2. The NHM-DK Department of Birds Curator of Ornithology will lead the team responsible for taxonomic verification, curation, cleaning, formatting and transformation of the data, and will oversee the introduction of metadata for the published dataset .
