説明

Autumn ornithological survey for the Karabatan-Ulke project The occurrence data related to the pattern of bird migration flows in the corridor of the 500 kV overhead power line construction "Karabatan – Ulke" (OHTL). The primary objectives were to record target bird species and quantitatively assess the level of flight activity in the study area. The fieldwork was conducted from August 24 to October 19, 2024, in the steppe zone of Western Kazakhstan, along the planned OHTL route from the "Ulke" substation in the northern Aktobe region to the "Karabatan" substation in the southern part of the Atyrau region. The Autumn ornithological survey for the Karabatan-Ulke project (the “Report”) has been prepared by Juru Limited.

収集方法

Along the proposed transmission line route, 30 observation points (VPs) were selected. These points were chosen with consideration of landscape features and potential bird activity, ensuring maximum visibility of key areas. The selection of observation points also took into account the results of a preliminary survey conducted along the OHTL route in June 2024.

Study Extent The study aims to examine the pattern of bird migration flows in the corridor of the 500 kV overhead power line construction "Karabatan – Ulke" (OHTL). The work was conducted in accordance with the Terms of Reference. The collected data allow conclusions about the structure of the migratory flow in the study area during different periods of the autumn bird migration, assess collision risks for birds with the OHTL, and develop recommendations for minimizing these risks.

Method step description:

  1. Two electronic forms were specifically designed for data collection in Next GIS and are completed daily by ornithological specialists in the field: Data recording form – this form was used to record key survey data, including: • Date, survey number, and time; • Observation coordinates; • Weather conditions: cloud cover, precipitation, wind direction and speed, visibility. • Each survey was assigned a unique identifier (ID), enabling precise identification of each case. Observation form – the second form was designed for detailed recording of each observation and included: • Survey number and unique ID; • Date and time of observation; • Species and number of birds; • Position of birds relative to the observer: distance, azimuth, altitude, and flight direction; • Information on bird behavior; • Additional comments. The collected data from these forms were uploaded to a server when the internet was available, allowing the specialist in the office to access up-to-date information at any time and monitor the progress of fieldwork in real time.
