Descrição

This dataset provides an updated inventory of amphipod species occurring in Italian marine waters, resulting from unpublished data by public and private institutions, in a period comprised between the early 1980s to 2025. A total of 4,362 records were listed, representing 302 species, 127 genera, and 51 families. The highest species richness was registered in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The dataset also documents eleven non-indigenous species (NIS) for Mediterranean Sea.Habitat characterization of sampling sites revealed amphipod species across fifteen substrate types, underscoring their broad habitat plasticity. The spatial and temporal resolution of the compiled data offers valuable insights into patterns of amphipod distribution and community composition, and provides a robust baseline for biodiversity assessments, environmental monitoring, and the management of emerging NIS in Italian marine ecosystems. The present dataset integrates the Italian amphipod checklist.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Dados Sobre o Projeto

The National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC) is the first National Research and Innovation Center dedicated to biodiversity, funded by the MUR through European Union funds - NextGenerationEU. It is a coordinating structure that unites and enhances research efforts, while simultaneously making knowledge and technologies accessible to diverse actors working on the territory. There are more than 2,000 researchers from research centers, universities and companies working within the center implementing basic, applied and innovation research actions dedicated to Mediterranean biodiversity to generate value for the country. The objective of this project is to identify suitable strategies for monitoring, conserving, restoring and valorising the biodiversity of species and habitats in different Italian regions. The Center provides scientific knowledge and technological innovation that make it possible to face biodiversity loss, support ecosystem resilience, monitor endangered species, and restore disturbed biological communities, contributing to the goal of protecting 30% of Italy's territory by 2030, as required by the European Union.

Métodos de Amostragem

Data were gathered through sampling campaigns conducted between the early 1980s and 2025 and following different protocols: the ARPAs adhered to the MSFD (2008/56/EC) and WFD (2000/60/EC) directives, while the other institutions (public and private) adopted different sampling methodologies with well-defined or sporadically sampling design. All species were found at depths between 0 and 110 m.

Área de Estudo Data refers to three regions of the Mediterranean sea: Tyrrhenian, Ionian (including the Strait of Sicily), and Adriatic basin.

Descrição dos passos do método:

  1. The dataset gathers information provided by public institutions, including ISPRA, regional ARPAs (Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Sicily, Veneto), universities (Palermo, Bari Aldo Moro, Messina, Salento, Tuscia), OGS, CNR and private entities such as the IMC Foundation and Aplysia.
  2. The geografic information was harmonise following the division of the Mediterranean sea into three regions: Tyrrhenian, Ionian (including the Strait of Sicily), and Adriatic basin. Their boundaries are located at Mazara del Vallo locality - between Tyrrhenian and Ionian, and Otranto – between Ionian and Adriatic. The geographical coordinates and sampling sites were recorded and imported into QGIS to verify the accuracy of the mapping, modifying and correcting records that ended up on land.
  3. The taxonomic information was updated in line with the World Amphipoda Database provided by World Marine Species Database (https://www.marinespecies.org/amphipoda/).
  4. Information about whether an organism or organisms have been introduced to a given place and time through the direct or indirect activity of modern humans was provided using the Establishment Means Controlled Vocabulary (native, introduced, uncertain).
  5. In order to characterise the habitats of the studied species, information on sampling substrates were defined based on EUNIS Habitat version 2021/2022.
