Description

This dataset contains occurrence data on epiphytic bryophytes surveyed at the eLTER site Zöbelboden, Austria. Epiphytic bryophytes were sampled in 1993, 2004, 2010, and 2023 on mature, vertically oriented trees of Fagus sylvatica, Acer pseudoplatanus, and Fraxinus excelsior.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 115 records.

3 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

Bryophytes were recorded using a measuring tape fastened around the trunk of each sample tree at approximately 120 cm above ground level. The tape was fixed in place with permanent nails to ensure that recordings were taken at the same position during repeated surveys. Observations were made at 5 cm intervals along the tape, recording the species intersecting the tape at each point from the upper edge. Species frequencies were recorded at these point records, and percentage cover was derived relative to the stem circumference. Stem circumference measurements show some irregularities, indicating that the effective sampling height may have varied slightly between survey years despite precautionary measures. This should be considered when interpreting temporal changes in species frequencies and cover.

Study Extent The eLTER site Zöbelboden is a remote forest site located within the Kalkalpen National Park in Upper Austria. The Zöbelboden was established in 1992 as the only Integrated Monitoring site in Austria under the UN Convention on long-range transboundary air pollution (CLRTAP). In 2006 it became part of LTER Austria. To monitor ephiphytic mosses, only trees without severe crown or bark damage were included in the surveys. Ten trees were established as permanent plots in 1993; some plots were later replaced due to windthrow, and additional plots were added in subsequent years.
Quality Control Stem circumference measurements show some irregularities, indicating that the effective sampling height may have varied slightly between survey years despite precautionary measures. This should be considered when interpreting temporal changes in species frequencies and cover.

Method step description:

  1. Selection of trees
  2. Repeated recording of occurrences
  3. Subsequent data storage, management, and harmonisation
